Navigating Breast Cancer: A Journey Through Reconstructive Surgery

December 09, 2024

Abbey McCarthy, a 46-year-old mother of three and special education professional in Devils Lake, North Dakota, faced an unexpected life change in November 2023. During her yearly mammogram, she was diagnosed with invasive ductal carcinoma.

A Difficult Decision

Initially recommended for a lumpectomy, Abbey's treatment plan quickly shifted to a double mastectomy. This abrupt change marked the beginning of a challenging journey under the care of Dr. Hector Campbell at Truyu Aesthetics Center.

“I went in for my yearly mammogram, and they found something. After the biopsy, it was positive. Initially, I thought a lumpectomy would suffice, but soon realized a double mastectomy was necessary,” Abbey shared.

Choosing Reconstruction

The decision for reconstructive surgery was immediate. Abbey, naive to many aspects of the procedure, felt an immediate "yes" for reconstruction despite the unknowns. “When I met with Dr. Hector Campbell, he was amazing. I love him; he's an amazing, amazing doctor. He helped me and my husband through the whole process and made sure we understood everything.”

Cancer journeys are riddled with uncertainties and emotional hurdles. Dr. Campbell's support was pivotal. “From our first consultation, I knew he was the one I wanted to do the reconstruction. He made me feel comfortable in a very scary journey. His expertise and compassion were evident, and he became more than just a doctor—a friend.”

"It was an absolute pleasure being a part of Abbey's care and reconstructive journey,” expresses Dr. Campbell

Under Dr. Campbell’s guidance, Abbey opted for the implant route, which allowed her to preserve her natural appearance—a significant aspect of her emotional and physical recovery.

The Importance of Trust

Trust in her healthcare team was crucial as Abbey navigated this life-altering process. “I’ve been with Altru for 18 years, and I trusted their direction,” she explained. “I never second-guessed going to Altru.”

Alongside Dr. Campbell, Abbey expressed deep gratitude for the staff, particularly Dr. Campbell’s nurse, Jamie, and his nurse practitioner, Laura, whose support was invaluable. “It makes such a difference to have kind, thoughtful people on your side.”

Reflecting on the Experience

The journey, though overwhelming, was made bearable by the empathetic and skilled hands of her healthcare providers. “Looking at me, you wouldn’t know I had a double mastectomy. I am so happy with how it turned out.”

“Our Altru, Truyu team all share the common goal in providing compassionate care for our patients,” explains Dr. Campbell. “We walk the path with them, celebrating their highs and empathetic with their lows. We believe in not only caring for our patients, but making our patients feel cared for. High fives to the team and thank you so much Abbey!”

A Message of Hope

This story is shared not just to recount a journey but to offer hope and comfort to those facing similar diagnoses. Healthcare providers like Dr. Campbell and the Altru team are dedicated to providing the best outcomes with compassion and expertise.
